Who Me?

I am a Schrodinger's Artist living with my beau and our dog. I am aware that I am potentially butchering the Schrodinger's concept, but I figured, "what the hell". For me my blog title means that I both 'am' and 'am not' an artist. At any given moment I could be either, it all depends on quantum.
Originally, I'm from the Bahamas, but I've been living in Canada quite a while. Though I still haven't gotten used to the weather.

Professionally, I'm a PhD student doing research on things most people don't care about. Specifically, I'm working on the Purple Sea Urchin (Strongylocetrotus purpuratus) and I'm looking the larval stages.

Anyway, enough of that.
In case you didn't know, science is hard, really really hard. It is both mentally and emotionally draining. Even sometimes physically, depending on the day. It's not that I don't enjoy my job, I love getting new data, but the process of acquiring that data is taxing to say the least.  So to keep myself sane, I try to keep my creative juices flowing through various pursuits.

I've always managed a balancing act between science (particularly biology) and my artsy interests, since I was a kid.
I started piano lessons at around 5 years old and I've gotten my Grade 5 with Trinity College. I also started singing in choirs at quite a young age and was with a teenage Christian Ensemble for a long time. While, as an adult, I'm not as consistent with piano as I would like, I will play around from time to time and try to learn some accompaniment to a song I quite like to sing.

Right now, most of my creative outlets are focused on art journaling, watercolor painting, singing and poetry. I am also the new Assistant Managing Editor for Carousel Magazine (run out of the University of Guelph) and I've been on their poetry editing committee for a number of years.

However, in the past I've had other pursuits:
For a while I was really into photography. I have a Flickr page, which is linked from the main page. My themes were mostly plants (they keep still) and animals. I didn't dabble a lot in landscapes because I find it hard to have a focus in those kinds of pictures. I have also played with media like oil pastels, acrylic and collage.

I was a figure model for Kim Taylor for a few years and I had a good time doing that, but a knee injury kept me from it for a while. I haven't gotten back into modeling since my recovery, but I think I would like it. It was a very interesting experience and I really liked Kim's work. It was fascinating observing the finished product on the camera's screen after prancing about naked in a studio for three hours.

More recently, I've been taking as many art classes as I can afford. I've done Sumi-e, pencil and charcoal work, figure drawing and more recently watercolor and art journaling.

In a nutshell, this blog is about artsiness. Mostly, it's a place for me to showcase my work and talk about it, but I also want to share quotes I like, and talk about my experiences (the artsy ones anyway) I'm aiming at family and friends, but anyone is welcome really.
Right now, I've been writing on my blog in the way that NASA sends out radio messages to the icy blackness of space.
Not directed at anyone.
At some point I'll get on giving people a link to my blog.  But for now, I'm just working on getting it together.

Thanks for checking me out.
Lots of Love
A.
